Nifty Faces Painful October After Sharp September Decline
Indian equities entered October weakened after one of the steepest monthly sell-offs in recent years. The Nifty dropped nearly 6% in September, marking its eighth consecutive weekly decline—the longest losing streak in 25 years. Foreign investors intensified selling, crude oil prices remained high, the rupee weakened, and US bond yields rose above 5%, pressuring the market further. FIIs ended a two-month buying streak and sold heavily, with 2026 outflows crossing Rs 2.5 lakh crore. Experts say September was a repricing amid global challenges, including a strong dollar and high US yields.
