After the ongoing census results, the true picture of urban areas in India will emerge. The parliamentary committee urged the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to reconsider the current city definitions, as over 3,000 towns still fall under rural local bodies. The ministry proposed a new 'transitional area' category to better identify and plan regions shifting towards urban characteristics. Urban population is expected to reach 870 million by 2047, up from an estimated 450-500 million in 2025.
