New Study Finds Mammography Overdiagnosis Risk Less Than 5%

A new study challenges the long-held belief about mammography overdiagnosis in breast cancer screening. Researchers from the University of Southern Denmark and other institutions reanalyzed data from eight major studies and found the risk of overdiagnosis to be less than 5%, much lower than the previously estimated 30-50%. Overdiagnosis refers to detecting slow-growing cancers that would not harm a woman during her lifetime, potentially leading to unnecessary treatment and anxiety.
