Scientists have identified a new seahorse species, Hippocampus amandavincentae, in Indian waters, resolving a century-old taxonomy confusion. Previously, the thorny seahorse Hippocampus histrix was thought to be a single widespread species from the Red Sea to the Pacific. Research in 2019 from Tamil Nadu samples revealed three distinct species: H. histrix in the Pacific, H. jayakari in the Arabian region, and the new Indian Ocean species.
