ScienceNepal to Drain Four Glacial Lakes to Reduce Flood Risk
Nepal plans to start draining four high-altitude glacial lakes this fiscal year to reduce flood risks after a disaster killed over 1,400 people. The lakes—Thulagi, Lower Barun, Lumding Tsho, and Hongu II—are located between 4,050 m and 5,483 m elevation. Officials aim to lower the risk of dam breaches and downstream floods by channeling water into nearby rivers. Rescue efforts continue for 5,000 missing after August's glacier collapse triggered landslides and floods.
