ScienceNepal to Drain Four Glacial Lakes to Prevent Floods
Nepal will begin a project this fiscal year to drain four high-altitude glacial lakes—Thulagi, Lower Barun, Lumding Tsho, and Hongu II—to reduce flood risks after a glacier collapse killed over 1,400 people. The effort involves canal construction to regulate water flow into rivers. Work faces challenges from high-altitude conditions and flood dangers. Studies and design work will continue until mid-2027.
