Navi Pillay: Nobel Peace Prize Winner and Human Rights Pioneer
Navi Pillay, a South African lawyer and human rights activist, recently won the Nobel Peace Prize. She achieved many firsts: the first non-white woman to start a law firm in Natal (1967), the first non-white woman High Court judge in South Africa (1995), and the first non-Western woman UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (2008-2014). Born to indentured laborers from Madras, she grew up facing racial discrimination in Durban.
