Montana Nanotyrannus Fossil Sells for $47.3 Million at Auction
A nearly 70%-complete Nanotyrannus skeleton named Jodi sold for $47.3 million at a Sotheby’s auction in New York, becoming the second-most expensive dinosaur fossil ever sold. Discovered in 2019 by Montana rancher Jodi Pierson on her Hell Creek Formation property, the fossil was excavated by paleontologist Clayton Phipps. It surpassed its $9 million estimate and follows the $50.1 million sale of a Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton earlier this year.
