New Zealand Cricket (NZC) decided not to own a team in Major League Cricket's 2027 season, ending its partnership with True North Sports Ventures. Captain Mitchell Santner supported this move, emphasizing NZC's focus on launching its own domestic T20 league, NZ20, to benefit local players. The NZ20 league launch was postponed from January to December 2027. Major League Cricket currently has six teams and plans to expand to ten.
