Mining Millionaire Bought Land That Became Griffith Park
In 1882, mining magnate Griffith J. Griffith purchased a large ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains for $50,000. Fourteen years later, in 1896, he donated much of this land to create Griffith Park in Los Angeles. The park has since become a vital recreational and cultural space for the city, remaining a cherished natural haven despite complexities in Griffith's personal legacy.
