ScienceMettur Dam Storage Drops to 32%, Threatening Delta Samba Crops
On September 1, Tamil Nadu CM C Joseph Vijay opened the sluices of the 92-year-old Mettur Dam for irrigation in the Cauvery Delta. Within a month, storage fell to 32.52% capacity as inflows from Karnataka dams dropped below 1,000 cusecs. Water releases may stop soon to preserve drinking supply, risking failure of samba crops in Delta districts. Farmers urge reducing outflow to 10,000 cusecs to extend irrigation.
