HealthMedicine Stockouts in South Africa Leave Chronic Patients Untreated
South Africa's Eastern Cape health department owes pharmaceutical suppliers about R1 billion (US$61.5 million), causing suspended accounts and widespread medicine stockouts. Patients requiring antibiotics, TB drugs, oncology products, insulin, and some pediatric antiretrovirals are most affected. A 2020 study recorded 609 stockout events, highlighting the severe impact on chronic patient treatment in the region.
