HealthMaharashtra Faces Worst Drought Since 1972, 80% Crops Destroyed
Marathwada region in Maharashtra is experiencing its worst drought since 1972, severely impacting agriculture. Districts like Latur, Beed, Parbhani, and Dharashiv received only 424.5 mm of rain from June to September against the normal 679.5 mm. About 80% of crops including soybean, cotton, and pigeon pea have dried up, causing a crisis for farmers. The drought also affects livestock feed, rural wages, household income, and future crop investments. A farmer in Latur's Devkara village committed suicide due to the distress.
