Madras Gate and Fort St. Louis History in Pondicherry

The Madras Gate was one of the entrances to Fort St. Louis in Pondicherry, located in present-day Ponnaiyapet. Fort St. Louis was the French counterpart to Madras' Fort St. George. An obelisk near the city commemorates Major William Stevens of the Madras Army, the chief architect of the 1778 siege of Pondicherry, who was killed in action and mourned by Major General Sir Hector Munro.
