Los Angeles Tests Road Mix Using Old Asphalt and Plastic Bottles

In 2019, Los Angeles launched a pilot project to repave streets using a mix of recycled old asphalt and plastic bottles. The process, developed by TechniSoil Industrial and supported by Caltrans, replaces bitumen with recycled PET plastic from bottles. A recycling train machine grinds and mixes the top road layer with liquid plastic, then lays the new surface without adding new asphalt. The first test was on 1st Street downtown in December 2020.
