A recent study on captive Gangetic gharials reveals that light is a stronger environmental cue than temperature for their morning basking behavior. Gharials use external heat sources to regulate body temperature, typically basking on sandbanks. Artificial night lighting may disrupt natural light cues, causing gharials to bask at inappropriate times or places, risking hypothermia. The study was led by Megha Khanduri from the University of Helsinki.
