ScienceLake Most Created by Flooding Former Czech Coal Mine
Lake Most in the Czech Republic was formed by flooding a former coal mine pit after mining ended in 1999. The old town of Most was demolished in the 1970s-80s to access coal. Engineers sealed the lake bed with clay and built barriers to prevent erosion. The flooding was completed in 2014, transforming the former mine into a recreational lake where people can swim.
