The Kerala government has approved Rs 12.5 lakh compensation for K K Surendran, a teacher allegedly tortured in police custody during the 2003 Muthanga tribal land agitation in Wayanad. The Home Department ordered the State Police Chief to release the amount and recover it from the personal assets of two police officers responsible for Surendran's illegal arrest and torture. The agitation involved tribal families occupying forest land demanding land rights.
