Kerala Faces Paddy Field Conservation Challenges Amid Rainfall Deficit
Kerala is experiencing a 28% rainfall deficit this southwest monsoon, receiving 1,446.5 mm against the normal 2,018.6 mm, causing drought-like conditions in many areas. This is the seventh-lowest monsoon rainfall since 1901. Farmers in Thrissur have started transplanting paddy saplings after moderate rains. Structural changes to the Kerala Conservation of Paddy Wetlands Act (KCPWA) have weakened conservation efforts, risking biodiversity and local climate regulation.
