SciencePhoto: Deccan HeraldKerala Faces Construction Material Shortage Despite Large Sand Deposits
Kerala is experiencing a severe shortage of construction materials due to Tamil Nadu's restrictions on transporting these materials. However, large quantities of sand and silt remain unutilized in Kerala's rivers and dams. After the 2018-19 floods, 43 of 44 rivers had 30.17 million cubic meters of sand deposits. Silt accumulation has reduced dam capacities by 13.8% on average and decreased Vembanad Lake's carrying capacity by 85%, contributing to flash floods. Kerala depends heavily on Tamil Nadu for sand and rocks, worsening the shortage.
