Kerala Biodiversity Register Reclaims Fisher Knowledge at CBD COP17

At the UN biodiversity conference CBD COP17 in Yerevan, marine researcher Robert Panippilla presented a digital community biodiversity register to correct the omission of indigenous fisher knowledge from Kerala's 2017 marine biodiversity register. Between 2013 and 2015, local fishers documented over 2,000 species and traditional knowledge in Thiruvananthapuram, but much was excluded due to scientific oversight. The 2026 conference reviews progress on the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
