ScienceKashmir's Rare Markhor Population Rises 71% in Kazinag Region
The rare Kashmir markhor, a wild goat species found only in India, has shown a 71% population increase in the Kazinag region since 2005, rising to an estimated 227 in 2024 from 133. Despite challenging terrain and security issues along the Line of Control, a joint assessment by Wildlife Trust of India and Jammu & Kashmir Wildlife Department recorded 600 sightings over four seasons, indicating significant recovery.
