PoliticsKarnataka Plans to Make Bengaluru Beggar-Free by 2027
The Karnataka government has announced a three-phase campaign—awareness, rescue, and rehabilitation—to make Bengaluru free of beggars by the end of 2027. The awareness phase, starting in November, will involve student volunteers and NGOs to discourage alms-giving. Rescue and rehabilitation efforts will follow at Nirashritara Parihara Kendras. After Bengaluru, the campaign will expand statewide. The 2011 census recorded 12,270 beggars in Karnataka, about 2.96% of India's total.
