Karnataka ranks third among Indian states with 60 centrally protected monuments facing encroachment, according to the Union Ministry of Culture's reply in Rajya Sabha. Out of 3,688 ASI-protected sites nationwide, 414 are encroached. Karnataka has 506 protected monuments, divided into Dharwad, Hampi, and Bengaluru divisions. Dharwad alone reports 57 encroachments, mostly in Vijayapura. Experts suggest actual numbers may be higher due to uncounted regulated areas.
