Karnataka Transport Minister Byrathi Suresh clarified that the recent bus fare hike is due to high diesel prices and rising wages, not the Shakti scheme which offers free travel to women. As of September 30, 2026, RTCs faced liabilities of Rs 9,912.1 crore, including diesel dues and wage arrears, along with Rs 2,916.8 crore operational losses. The fare increase is expected to raise the scheme's outlay substantially.
