ScienceKarl Deisseroth and Colleagues Win 2026 Nobel for Optogenetics
American scientist Karl Deisseroth, along with German scientists Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel, won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discovery of light-gated ion channels and development of optogenetics. This technique allows control of individual nerve cells using light, helping scientists understand brain function. Deisseroth is 54, Hegemann 71, and Nagel 73. The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet honored their work.
