At the World Wrestling Championships in Astana, 18-year-old Kajal Dhochak made history by becoming the first Indian woman to win a medal in the heavyweight category. She narrowly lost the 76kg final to Ukraine's Anastasiya Alpyeyeva. Neelam Sirohi also reached the 50kg final but was defeated by Japan's four-time world champion Yui Susaki. This marked the first time India had two women in gold medal bouts at the same World Championships.
