In July 2023, a Michigan jury ruled that a handwritten will found in Aretha Franklin's couch cushions was valid. The verdict resolved a dispute among her sons over her estate. Franklin, who died in 2018 without a formal will, had two handwritten documents discovered in her Detroit home. The 2014 will awarded her $1.1 million Michigan home to her son Kecalf.
