John Wayne Declined Role in Blazing Saddles, a Western Classic

In 1974, John Wayne turned down a role in Mel Brooks' Blazing Saddles, a Western comedy that became highly influential. Although Wayne liked the script, he declined due to its raunchy humor. The role went to Gene Wilder, whose performance was pivotal to the film's success. Brooks revealed this during the film's 50th anniversary, explaining Wayne was his first choice for the character Jim, the Waco Kid.
