Jharkhand government has decided to re-auction 62 closed coal mines to better utilize mineral resources and curb illegal mining. In a June 3, 2026 review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Hemant Soren, directives were issued to cancel allocations of mines where mining has not started despite land acquisition and environmental approvals. Mining Secretary Arwa Rajkamal has asked district collectors and police chiefs for compliance reports. Besides coal, action will be taken on 49 closed mines of iron ore, bauxite, limestone, and graphite.
