J.C. Hunter's Land Sale Led to Guadalupe Mountains National Park
In 1934, J.C. Hunter offered 43,200 acres to the government for a national park, but the plan did not proceed. In 1969, his son J.C. Hunter Jr. sold a much larger land parcel to the government, over 90% of what became Guadalupe Mountains National Park. The initial offer was $237,600, while the later sale was $1.5 million.
