Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that Indian Railways is quadrupling seven major trunk routes to ease congestion, reduce delays, and cut long passenger waiting lists. Heavy freight, especially coal, and high passenger traffic have caused peak pressure on existing lines. Over the past decade, 36,000 km of additional tracks were laid, but more capacity is needed. The government prioritizes four-lining key national routes forming the golden quadrilateral and diagonal corridors.
