India's government will implement SIM-binding rules for messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal starting January 1, 2027. The Department of Telecommunications mandates linking user accounts to the active SIM used for registration by December 31, 2026, to curb cyber fraud involving Indian mobile numbers. This will replace current OTP verification and may disrupt users who frequently change SIMs or use Wi-Fi-only devices.
