HealthIndia Struggles to End Leprosy Transmission Despite Progress
India has seen a decline in leprosy prevalence and grade-2 disability rates over the past decade, with national prevalence dropping below 1 case per 10,000 by 2005. However, ongoing transmission in certain areas hinders meeting the National Strategic Plan 2023-2027 targets. The integration of leprosy surveillance into general health services and shortened treatment registration periods contributed to complacency and continued spread. Children accounted for 46% of cases in 2025, prompting renewed focus on transmission reduction.
