India has set a foodgrain production target of 373.93 million tonnes for the 2026-27 crop year, slightly below the record 376.56 million tonnes produced in 2025-26. Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan cited weather risks like El Nino and uneven monsoon rainfall as reasons. The rabi season target is 177.72 million tonnes, up from 171.14 million tonnes. Kharif sowing area is down by 1.5 million hectares, affecting key crops like rice and maize.
