The World Bank's India Poverty and Equity Brief October 2026 reports a significant reduction in poverty, with the share of Indians living below $4.2 a day dropping from 57.7% in 2011 to 16.1% in 2023. Around 496 million people moved above the poverty line. Extreme poverty fell from 27.1% to 2.6%. Improvements are linked to consumption growth, rising employment, especially among women, and welfare measures. Despite progress, India ranks 100th in the 2026 Global Hunger Index due to high child undernourishment.
