India's proposed 11,200 MW Siang Upper Multipurpose Project, planned in response to China's massive Brahmaputra hydropower initiative, faces serious law and order challenges. Violence and tension have erupted in eastern Siang and nearby areas, with local groups fearing displacement, loss of farmland, and impact on traditional life. The project risks submerging dozens of villages and displacing thousands. China has started construction on a 60,000 MW project downstream in Tibet since July 2025. The CBI is investigating alleged FCRA violations linked to foreign funding of environmental activists opposing the project.
