India’s Higher Education Faces 34% Faculty Vacancy: SBI Report

India’s higher education system has grown significantly over the past decade, with 1,289 universities, 48,246 colleges, and 15,221 standalone institutes in FY24, totaling 64,756 institutions—a 47% increase since FY14. Student enrollment reached 4.5 crore, with diverse community representation. However, about 34% of faculty positions remain vacant in centrally funded institutions, highlighting a critical shortage, according to an SBI Research report.
