The World Bank reported that India's extreme poverty rate dropped sharply to 2.6% in 2023 from 27.1% in 2011, lifting an estimated 496 million people out of poverty. The BJP credited this decline to sustained policy efforts by the Modi government, calling it a sign of inclusive growth and a prosperous New India. The report used thresholds of USD 3 and USD 4.20 per day at 2021 PPP for poverty measurement.
