India's coal imports fell by 5.83% in August compared to the previous year, importing 104.57 million tonnes versus 111.05 million tonnes last year. This decline is attributed to increased domestic coal production and reduced overseas shipments. Imports by domestic coal-based power plants dropped 35.23%, while thermal power plants using only imported coal saw a 1% rise. Overall, coal imports by the power sector fell 6.4%, with imported coal's share in consumption decreasing to 19.3%.
