India's Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Boosts Girl Births in High Son-Preference Areas

India's Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) program has increased the number of girls born in districts where it was first launched, adding about 15 girls per 1,000 births. The biggest impact was among families whose first child is a daughter, reducing son preference especially in second and later births, with a 2.1 percentage point rise in girl births. This shows the program's success in addressing gender imbalance at birth.
