HealthIndia Reports Higher Than Expected Leprosy Cases in 2025-26
India reported 91,783 new leprosy cases in 2025-26, 41.2% above the projected 65,000. New cases among children were 91.6% higher than expected. The Grade 2 Disability rate was 1.34 per million, exceeding the target of one per million. The national prevalence rate was 0.56 per 10,000, below the elimination target, but some states like Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand had rates above one per 10,000. 14.8% of districts had prevalence rates above one per 10,000.
