India Launches Digital Postal Index Number System (DIGIPIN)

The Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications, has introduced the Digital Postal Index Number (DIGIPIN) system to address limitations of traditional postal addresses. DIGIPIN divides India into a precise grid of about 4×4 square meters, providing geo-referenced digital addresses nationwide. This initiative supports India's national geospatial data policies to democratize location data and improve address accuracy, especially in rural and rapidly urbanizing areas.
