India Faces 51% Drought Despite Varied Monsoon Rainfall in 2026
The 2026 monsoon season in India ended with 51% of the country experiencing drought conditions. Some regions recorded the lowest rainfall in 17 years, while others saw the highest in 20 years. Maharashtra suffered an 80% crop loss due to weak rains, marking the fourth weakest monsoon since 2001. Punjab and Rajasthan received 41% and 21% less rainfall respectively. Officials are considering declaring 2026 a drought year.
