Since the 1950s, the US pet trade imported spectacled caimans, native to Central and South America, into Florida. These caimans established breeding populations in the Everglades by the 1970s, often escaping or being released from captivity. Scientists from the University of Florida and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are studying their impact, concerned that these nonnative reptiles may compete with native crocodilians in the wetlands.
