Illegal Sand Mining Threatens Rivers in Uttara Kannada

Rivers in Uttara Kannada, rich in mangroves and fish species, face threats from illegal sand mining. Despite a National Green Tribunal order suspending mining in Coastal Regulation Zone areas, unauthorized extraction continues. Police recently seized 50–60 tonnes of sand worth Rs 1.20 lakh. Illegal mining occurs along Sharavathi, Aghanashini, Gangavali, and Kali rivers, sometimes even during the day, with suspected backing by influential individuals.

DRDO Senior Scientist Dies by Suicide in Bengaluru

Sharad Katiyar, a 47-year-old senior scientist at the Aeronautical Development Agency under DRDO, died by suicide on October 21 in Seegehalli near Whitefield, Bengaluru. He jumped from the fifth floor of an apartment. Katiyar had been treated for psychological disorder and severe depression at private and government hospitals. His death was reported after his wife filed an unnatural death complaint.
