Illegal Dump Transformed into 33-Acre Wetland in Philadelphia
Since 2022, workers have converted an illegal dump in South Philadelphia's FDR Park into a 33-acre tidal wetland with 7,000 trees. This restoration supports local wildlife, improves biodiversity by attracting birds and mammals, and acts as a natural flood management system for stormwater. The project received the Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence from Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection.
