IISc Study Finds Strong Magnetic Fields Can Exceed White Dwarf Mass Limit

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and collaborators have simulated that strong internal magnetic fields in white dwarfs can allow these stellar remnants to grow beyond the Chandrasekhar limit of 1.4 solar masses. Their study shows a magnetised carbon-oxygen white dwarf reaching about 2.4 times the Sun's mass, challenging previous mass constraints for non-rotating, non-magnetised white dwarfs.
