Henry Ford began acquiring over 2,000 acres around the Rouge River in Michigan by 1909 to create his country home, Fair Lane in Dearborn. The estate included forests, farmland, and river land, serving as a bird and game sanctuary. The home and gardens covered about 1,260 acres, with the mansion built between 1914 and 1915, designed in Prairie style by architects including Marion Mahony Griffin.
