Hawaii’s Rare O‘ahu Tree Snails Return to Wild After 33 Years
After nearly being wiped out by an introduced predator, only 11 O‘ahu tree snails survived. Conservationists rescued the last snails in 1991, bred them to over 1,000, and established a protected habitat in Hawaii's Ko‘olau Mountains. Despite this success, their long-term survival remains uncertain, requiring ongoing monitoring and breeding efforts.
